My assignment was to select 12 books from my collection, to create a personal response to Georges Perec’s essay, Brief Notes on the Art and Manner of Arranging One’s Books.
I chose to documents all of the books in my collection that reside outside of my bookshelf. These range from cookbooks, to my car’s owner’s manual. This was a fun exercise of subtle and abstract information design. My selected books are each data points that represent:
- the frequency that the books travel (opacity)
- the distance the book travels (radius of circle)
- the number of steps to my bookshelf (dotted path)
This project was a fun way to explore type hierarchy and the organization of information. This book went through multiple iterations to find the most efficient, yet visually interesting solution to displaying the information.
